Lineage shows how data flows through your ecosystem. Trace datasources to datasets, datasets to their fields, and fields through transformations to trace data flow, spot dependencies, and identify quality or compliance risks.

To view lineage for an asset:

  1. Go to Catalog.
    1. For datasource lineage, go to Datasources and select a datasource.
    2. For dataset lineage, go to Datasets and select a dataset.
    3. For field lineage, go to Fields and select a field.
  2. Select the Lineage tab to view the complete lineage diagram.
    Adjust zoom as needed using the percentage selector.
  3. Expand assets to reveal child items (five display by default). Click Show More to see the complete list.
  4. Click Expand All or Collapse All to manage visibility across all items.
  5. Interact with items in the card list:
    1. Hover over a card to see the full path.
    2. Click a card to open the information panel.
      The panel shows name, type, data quality score, certification status, description, business terms, and related assets.
    3. Right-click a card for a menu with Show Information, Open, or Open in New Tab.
  6. Select the Details tab in the information panel to view asset properties and business contexts.
You can now trace data flow through your ecosystem and understand dependencies.

  • Evaluate data impact across your organization

Add manual lineage relationships

Manually add lineage relationships at the datasource, dataset, and field levels to reflect accurate data flow and dependencies across your organization.
  • Datasource level: Relationships affect the entire datasource, which may include multiple datasets and fields. Use this level to define how different datasources relate to each other through common keys or identifiers.
  • Dataset level: Relationships affect only the datasets involved, allowing you to create relationships specific to those datasets' context. This level helps you connect datasets that share common fields or attributes, enabling combined analyses or reports.
  • Field level: Relationships affect only the specific fields involved in the relationship. This is the most granular level of data management, giving you precise control over how data interconnects (for example, joining datasets using a common field such as ID or Name).
  1. Go to the asset type you want to add a lineage relationship to.
    • For a datasource: Go to Catalog > Datasources and select the specific datasource.
    • For a dataset: Go to Catalog > Datasets and select the specific dataset.
    • For a field: Go to Catalog > Fields and select the specific field.
  2. Go to the Lineage tab to view the origin card containing information about the selected asset.
  3. Enable Edit-mode to start building lineage relationships manually.
  4. Hover over the card to view the information within it.
    Note: The card itself cannot establish a relationship with another card. Only the items within the card can form relationships. For datasources, hover over the dataset in the card to select the relationship direction.
  5. Locate the two arrows or + (Add) buttons that appear in both directions, then hover over them to select the relationship direction (either downstream or upstream).
    Note: For datasources: If the card is in a selected state and no options appear when hovering, it indicates that a relationship cannot be established at the datasource level.
  6. Select the relationship direction to open the Add Lineage Relationships side panel.
  7. Select the asset you want to link to the current asset.
    • For datasources or datasets: A list of available datasets will appear. Select the dataset you want to link to the current asset.
    • For fields: The side panel displays a list of available fields that can be related to the selected field. If you want to add another field of the same type, type the name of the field in the provided search box. As you type, the system filters the list to show matching fields. Click the field you want to add as a downstream relationship from the filtered list.
  8. Click Next to proceed.
  9. Select the Relationship Type.
    Choose the appropriate type (for example, upstream or downstream) based on how the assets interact.
  10. Map the columns that correspond to the selected assets according to the established relationship types.
  11. Click Add.
The selected asset is added to the canvas in the chosen direction. Review the lineage diagram to ensure that the new relationship is accurately represented. You should see a line connecting the original asset to the newly added asset.
