Technical asset types represent IT components such as software applications, databases, servers, and network devices. Configure them to maintain an accurate asset inventory and enforce compliance with IT policies.

Common technical asset types include:

  • Software Applications: Programs and applications used within your organization.
  • Databases: Structured collections of data stored and accessed electronically.
  • Servers: Hardware or virtual machines that provide services to other computers.
  • Network Devices: Routers, switches, and other devices that manage network communication.

To create technical asset types:

  1. Go to Configuration > Governance > Technical Assets.
  2. Click Create Asset Type. The Create Asset Type dialog opens.
  3. Enter a Name for the asset type. The name you enter appears in the Technical Assets list view.
  4. Complete the Display format field.
  5. Add a Description to provide more context about the asset type.
  6. Choose a Background Color for the asset type.
  7. Select an Icon to represent this asset type visually. You can scroll through the list of available options, or type to search for an icon by name. If you do not select a custom icon, the default icon is used.
  8. Click Create Asset Type to save the new asset type.
  9. After creating a technical asset type, you can proceed to Catalog > Technical Assets to create technical assets for that type.
You can edit technical asset types in the Containment or Inheritance hierarchy views to update their properties and relationships.
  1. In Configuration > Governance > Technical Assets, locate the asset type you want to edit in the Containment or Inheritance hierarchy view.
  2. Click the ellipsis on the asset type row and choose Edit. The Edit Asset Type dialog opens.
  3. Edit the details or select a different Parent Asset Type as needed.
    Note:
    • The Inherit from and Asset type purpose fields will be disabled and cannot be edited once assets have been created for the asset type.
    • Predicate to parent field cannot be modified or removed while relationships exist for an asset type.
  4. Click Save to save your edits.
The updated asset type configuration is applied to the system. Changes to fields, relationships, or properties are reflected in the hierarchy views and affect how technical assets are managed and displayed.

Add a child technical asset type

Create child asset types to establish parent-child relationships in your technical asset hierarchy and model containment structures that reflect your organization's technical infrastructure.
Note: The option to add a child asset type is only available from the containment hierarchy view.
  1. In Configuration > Governance > Technical Assets locate the parent asset type under Containment hierarchy view.
  2. Click the ellipsis on the parent row and choose Add Child Asset Type.
    The Create Asset Type dialog appears for the new child type.
  3. In the switch view, select either Create New Asset Type or Use Existing Asset Type.
  4. Complete the required fields.
    • Name
    • Display format
    • Description
  5. Verify the Predicate to parent field. This field is pre-populated as 'Child Of'.
  6. Click Save to create the child asset type.
A new child asset type is added under the selected parent(s). You can map multiple parent relationships if needed.

Change history for technical asset types

The change history records all changes made to technical asset types. It provides a detailed log of modifications for troubleshooting, auditing, and version control.

To access the change history for technical asset types:

  1. Go to Configuration > Governance > Technical Assets and click the technical asset type you want to view.
  2. Go to the Change History tab. The change history table includes the following columns:
    • Revision/Action: Indicates the revision number and the type of action performed (for example, property value added, asset type created). Use this to identify the sequence of changes and the type of modifications made.
    • Object: Specifies the object or attribute of the technical asset type that was changed (for example, Background color, Display format, Name, Asset type).
    • Value: Shows the new value assigned to the object or attribute after the change (For example, Sunshine (for Background color), {Name} (for Display format), Glossary Definition (for Name)).
    • Updated by: Indicates the name of the user who made the change.
    • Updated on: Displays the date and time when the change was made.
  3. Review the table to understand what changes were made, who made them, and when.
