You can add owners to domains when creating a new domain. When you update ownership on a domain, the changes automatically propagate to child domains and related assets unless they have local overrides.

  1. Go to Governance > Domains.
  2. Click a domain name to open its Details page.
  3. In the Ownership type panel, click Add Owners to assign ownership.
  4. In the Add Owners to Domain panel, select an ownership type from the Ownership Types dropdown list.
  5. If the ownership type you need does not exist, you can create it inline using the following steps:
    1. Click Create/Add custom Ownership Type. The Create Custom Ownership Type dialog opens.
    2. Enter a name for the ownership type in the Ownership Type Name field.
    3. Optionally, enter a description in the Description (Optional) field to provide additional context about the ownership type's purpose and responsibilities.
    4. Click Create to save the custom ownership type.
    5. After creation, the custom ownership type immediately appears in the Ownership Types dropdown list and is available to all users in your workspace.
    6. Select the newly created ownership type from the Ownership Types dropdown list.
Note: The ownership type dropdown also provides the following actions:
      • When the Ownership Type is used in a domain, you cannot delete it. This prevents accidental removal of critical ownership assignments.
      • When the Ownership Type is not used, you can edit or delete it to maintain a clean list of available ownership types.
      • In the dropdown, click the info icon next to the ownership type you want to modify. The fields to edit or delete the type will open in the same dialog.
      • To edit, update the name or description as needed and click Update to save your changes.
      • To delete an ownership type, click Delete Ownership Type.
Warning: If the ownership type is currently applied to one or more domains, a message appears stating "Cannot delete ownership type- it is referenced by existing ownership policies" with the number of domains using it. To proceed with deletion, you must first remove this ownership type from all domains where it is applied from the domain Details page. Return to the ownership types list and perform the above steps to delete it.
  6. Select the owner from the Users and Groups list by clicking the checkbox next to their name.

You can search for users or groups by name or email address using the search field. Groups are identified with a "Group Name" designation and display a member count. Click a group name to view its members and their email addresses.

  7. Click Add to add the selected owner with the specified ownership type to the domain.
Tip: You can assign multiple owners to a single domain, each with different ownership types. For example, you might assign both a Data Steward and a Sponsor to the same domain. You can also assign the same user or group with multiple ownership types. Repeat steps 4 to 6 to add additional owners as needed.

After adding domain owners:

  • Ownership changes are immediately reflected in the domain details.
  • Related assets receive updated ownership information.
  • Child domains inherit ownership from their parent domain, including both the owner and the ownership type.
  • The audit trail displays all ownership changes, including who made the change, when it was made, and what was changed. Open a domain's details page and go to Change History tab to view the ownership audit trail.
