Lineage diagrams help you visualize the flow of your data assets within the system. Filter, search, and trace features enable you to focus on relevant data elements, locate specific assets, and understand how specific assets interact with each other.

Go to Catalog and explore lineage at Datasources, Datasets or Fields.

Filter lineage diagrams

Use filtering to reduce noise within lineage diagrams and focus on relevant data elements while maintaining the complete context of your data flow.

  1. Go to the Lineage tab and select Filter.
  2. Choose an operator: is, is not, is populated, or is not populated.
  3. Select datasource types (Snowflake, Databricks, Salesforce) and Data Quality scores to filter by.
    Note: Filters based on scoring consider parent datasets and child assets. Displayed datasets may include fields with low scores even if the overall dataset score is medium or good.
  4. Click Apply to confirm your filter choices.
  5. Review the results showing matching Datasources, Datasets, and Fields.
    Note: A Datasource matches if it meets the criteria directly or if any associated datasets or fields meet the conditions. Non-matching elements appear dimmed, with counts showing how many datasets meet the criteria.
  6. Click Clear All or Reset Filters to return to the original view.

Key points:

  • When filtering by poor data quality scores, the system displays datasets with poor scores or linked fields with poor scores. Drill down into datasets to find specific fields with lower scores.
  • Multiple filters use AND logic. Only cards meeting all criteria remain visible.
  • Filters stay active as you navigate, keeping your focus on specific data elements.
  • Selecting a field for tracing bypasses filter constraints for grayed-out nodes.

Search lineage diagrams

Search lineage diagrams to find specific data elements while keeping all nodes visible for complete context.

  1. Enter your search term in the search field. Containers collapse initially, with the origin item selected.
  2. Expand cards manually or click Expand All to reveal all items.
  3. Type your search term (for example, 'email') and press Enter.
    Note: Search requires a minimum of 3 characters. Other search features, such as Catalog search, don't have this restriction.
  4. Review results as they load instantly. Matching cards expand automatically. If a search term matches a field, the datasource node highlights even at the datasource level.
  5. Reset the search to return cards to their original state, except for manually adjusted cards.

Search behavior:

  • Case-insensitive: Capitalization doesn't matter. Searching for "DataSource", "datasource", or "DATASOURCE" returns the same results.
  • Contains-based: Results include the search term anywhere in the asset name or description. For example, searching for "data" returns "datasource", "metadata", and "dataset".
  • Matching items highlight in yellow. A count shows unique assets that match. Assets in multiple categories count as one match.
  • At the datasource level, any dataset with fields matching the search term displays.
  • Counts update to show datasets and fields that match your search.
  • Drill down into results: Select a matching item, right-click, and click Open to view the dataset-level lineage diagram. Your search term stays active and cards expand automatically as you navigate.
Note: If no items match your search, a notification appears.

Trace lineage diagrams

Use tracing to visualize the flow of your data assets and understand how specific assets interact with each other.

By emphasizing the connections between assets, it enables you to glean insights into how specific assets interact with each other.
  1. Choose the asset for which you want to trace lineage. This could be a datasource, dataset, or a specific field.
  2. Click the chosen asset to open the Information panel and view its details. Then go to the Lineage tab to access the lineage diagram.
  3. Upon selecting a specific asset, observe that all directly related assets will be highlighted in the lineage diagram. This visual representation aids in comprehending the asset's flow through the system.
  4. Use the highlighted relationships to analyze how the selected asset interacts with other assets in the lineage diagram. This insight is crucial for understanding the provenance of your data.
  5. Alternatively, open the information panel for the asset, right-click any row from the list of related datasets or fields, and choose Trace from the context menu.
  6. Hover over cards in the lineage diagram to see location information (full path including datasource, schema, and asset name), which helps you identify the correct asset to trace.
Note: Tracing takes precedence over any active filter or search settings. If you trace an asset, the system will display its complete lineage and relationships, ignoring any applied filters. This ensures you have full visibility into all relevant data connections.
