Use Gio™ AI Assistant to automatically generate descriptions for datasets and data fields. Generate descriptions individually or in bulk to improve metadata completeness and governance.

Note: Before you begin, ensure the following conditions are met:
  • You have Manage Asset permission for the dataset or field you want to describe.
  • Your Workspace Owner or Manager has enabled the Auto Generate Descriptions feature in the AI tab under Configuration.

Gio™ AI Assistant analyzes asset metadata (names, data types, sample values, and classifications) to generate contextually relevant descriptions for datasets and fields.

  • For datasets: Generate descriptions for entire datasets to improve metadata completeness.
  • For data fields: Generate descriptions for individual fields to enhance catalog usability and discoverability.

You can generate descriptions in four ways:

  • From the details side panel: Quick generation while browsing assets in list view
  • From the details page: Generate with full asset context
  • From the edit page: Generate or modify descriptions while editing
  • Bulk generation: Generate descriptions for multiple fields within a dataset at once

All generated descriptions are tracked in the asset's Change Log for audit and compliance purposes.

  1. Choose your generation method: individual descriptions (proceed to Step 2) or bulk field descriptions within a dataset (proceed to Step 8).
  2. Go to Catalog > Datasets (for datasets) or Catalog > Fields (for individual fields).
  3. Choose one of three locations to generate the description:
    1. From the details side panel: Click any asset row to open the side panel, then click Generate in the description section.
    2. From the details page: Click the asset name to open its full details page, then click Generate in the description section.
    3. From the edit page: Click the asset name, then click Edit. Scroll to the description box and click Generate.
  4. Wait for Gio™ AI Assistant to generate a description for the asset.
  5. Review the generated description and choose an action:
    • Retry: Generate an alternative description
    • Save: Add the description to the asset (side panel and details page only)
    • Clear: Delete the generated description without saving (edit page only)
    • Cancel: Discard the generated description (side panel and details page only)
  6. Click Save to add the generated description to the asset.

After saving, you can edit the description from the asset's edit page, regenerate it for alternatives, or discard it if unsatisfactory.

  7. Skip to Step 12 to verify your changes in the Change Log.

The following steps describe bulk field description generation. If you generated individual descriptions, proceed to verification.

  8. For bulk field generation, go to Catalog > Datasets and locate the dataset for which you want to generate field descriptions.
  9. Access the Fields section by clicking the dataset card to open the side panel, or clicking the dataset name to open the full details page.
  10. In the Fields section, click the AI Action button and choose your generation scope:
    • Generate All Descriptions: Generate descriptions for all fields in the dataset
    • Generate Missing Descriptions: Generate descriptions only for fields without descriptions
Note: By default, the override option is disabled. Only blank or missing descriptions are populated. Manually curated descriptions are preserved.
  11. Review the generated descriptions in the dialog and select which fields to update:
If a description exists, choose the existing or AI-generated version. The existing description is used by default. Compare both versions to inform your decision.
  12. Select the fields you want to update by clicking their checkboxes:
    • Select individual fields by clicking their checkboxes
    • Browse across pages and select fields from multiple pages
    • The item count shows total selections across all pages
Note: If you click Close before saving, all selections are discarded. If you click Close after saving, only saved items are retained.
  13. Click Save Selected to apply the descriptions to the selected fields.

The system analyzes field metadata, generates contextually relevant descriptions, and populates the selected fields. Generation completes in ≤3 seconds per field (for tables up to 500 columns).

  14. After the descriptions are saved, the cards update automatically. An Undo option appears if you need to revert the change.
  15. Review the newly generated descriptions in the refreshed Fields section:
    • Scan the description column for newly populated fields
    • Verify that descriptions are accurate and relevant to your dataset
    • Identify any fields that may require refinement or manual adjustment

If generation fails for any fields, an error notification specifies which fields failed and why (for example, missing metadata or unsupported field types).

  16. Verify all changes in the Change Log which includes:
    • Timestamp of the generation operation
    • User who initiated the generation
    • List of affected fields or datasets
    • Previous and new descriptions
    • Summary of the action (for example, "Auto-generated descriptions for 45 fields")

This audit trail supports compliance requirements and allows you to track metadata changes over time.

You have successfully generated descriptions for your datasets and data fields. The descriptions are now stored on the assets and appear in the Catalog, improving metadata completeness and discoverability.
