The search feature in lineage diagrams allows you to efficiently locate specific data elements within complex datasets. It is designed to maintain the context of the lineage diagram. This means that applying search criteria will not remove any nodes from the diagram. All nodes remain visible, providing a complete view of the data flow, while nodes that match the search criteria will be highlighted for significance.

You can navigate to the Catalog from the main navigation menu and explore lineage at the following levels:

To initiate a search, follow these steps:

  1. Enter search terms in the search field added to the diagram. Initially, containers will collapse, with the origin item selected.
  2. Manually expand the cards, or utilize the Expand All button to reveal all items at once.
  3. Enter your desired search term (such as 'email') and hit Enter.
Note: The search functionality requires a minimum of 3 characters to initiate a search. While this character limit is necessary for lineage searches, other search functionalities, such as those in the Catalog, do not have this restriction.
  4. Results will load instantaneously, with all corresponding cards expanding to display the results. If a search term matches a field, the corresponding datasource node will still be highlighted, even if you are viewing the datasource level.
  5. The system remembers the original state of each card. When the search is reset, cards will revert to their original state, except for those that have been manually adjusted.

Search criteria and results:

  • Case-insensitive: The search functionality allows you to enter search terms without worrying about capitalization. For example, searching for "DataSource" will yield the same results as "datasource" or "DATASOURCE".
  • Contains-based: The search will return results that contain the search term anywhere within the asset name or description. For example, if you search for "data", it will return results for "datasource", "metadata", and "dataset".
  • Matches are highlighted in yellow, and a unique count of assets that fulfill the search criteria is provided. If an asset appears in multiple categories, it is counted as a single match.
  • For lineage at the datasource level, any dataset that includes fields aligning with the search term will be displayed.
  • Updated counts will reflect the number of datasets and fields that correspond to the search criteria.
  • Search drill down scenario: You can delve deeper into matching items for a more granular view. For instance, to navigate from the datasource level to the dataset level, select the desired item, right-click to bring up the context menu, and click on Open to access the dataset-level lineage diagram. The search term will remain active throughout this navigation, and cards will automatically expand as you move through the various levels.
Note: If there are no items that meet the search criteria, a toast notification will appear, indicating that no results are available.
