Quality rules for fields validate data at the column level and ensure your datasets meet your organization's data standards. Create rules manually, use Gio™ AI Assistant to generate recommendations, then run them to generate quality scores.

All field-level rule management starts from the Fields page in Catalog. Select your field and go to the Rules tab to access the Data Quality section.
  1. Click Catalog > Fields.
  2. Click the field you want to work with.
  3. Go to the Rules tab and select Data Quality.

Create or edit rules manually

When you create a rule from the fields page, the target field is automatically pre-populated.
  1. Choose one of these options:
    1. To create a new rule, click Create Rule.
    2. To edit an existing rule, click the ellipsis next to the rule and click Edit.
  2. If creating a new rule, verify that your selected field appears in the target assets section.
  3. Configure the pass conditions and enter the other required details for your rule.
  4. Click Create to save a new rule, or click Save to save your edits.
The system creates or updates your rule. For new rules, you're redirected to the assets page from which the rule originated. Your updated rule is ready to run.
For comprehensive guidance on creating custom rules with advanced options, see Configure custom rules.

Generate rules with Gio AI Assistant

Gio™ AI Assistant analyzes your field's properties, semantic types, and existing rules to recommend relevant rules and prevent duplicates. You can accept recommended rules, customize them, or ask the assistant to generate rules based on your specific requirements.

Launch Gio™ AI Assistant from the field details panel or from the Rules tab for more contextual analysis.

  1. Launch Gio™ AI Assistant.
  2. Choose one of these options:
    1. Select a rule from the rule recommendations list that Gio™ AI Assistant displays.
    2. Or enter your own query in the chat window to create a custom rule based on your specific requirements.
  3. If you launched from the Rules tab, provide any additional details that Gio™ AI Assistant requests for further analysis.
For example, you may be asked to specify the name of the dataset that contains the field.
  4. Review the rules that Gio™ AI Assistant suggests (up to three rules per field).
The assistant checks for similar existing rules and prompts you if a duplicate might be created. Gio™ AI Assistant analyzes the field details (including its name, semantic type, existing rules, and best practices) to recommend relevant rules.
  5. Select the rules you want to use and click Apply Rules to add them to your application's rule repository.
If the suggested rules don't meet your needs, click Reject to dismiss them.
Your selected rules are added to the field and are ready to run.

Run rules and generate quality scores

When you run a rule for a field, the system evaluates only that field's data against the rule's pass conditions and generates a corresponding quality score. This targeted approach helps you identify data quality issues in specific columns.

Click the ellipsis next to the rule you want to run and click Run for this Asset.

The system initiates rule execution for the selected field. Upon successful completion, the rule generates a quality score that indicates the overall quality of data in the selected field.
