Governance rules help you evaluate assets in the catalog based on metadata and asset type. Each rule defines how assets are scored and which asset types it Applies to. You can view, create, edit, and review rule details and the scores assigned to individual assets.
Understand the key concepts
Governance rules run automatically and trigger re-scoring of assets when related changes occur to the rule or to the asset’s metadata. Specifically:
- When an asset’s metadata changes and a governance rule applies to that metadata, the rule runs automatically. For example, updating the asset’s certification status to "Certified" triggers the related rule.
- When a new asset is added to its asset type, the corresponding governance rule runs automatically and the new asset is scored.
The following are the key concepts of governance rule framework:
- Governance rule: A formal criterion used to evaluate assets across one or more asset types.
- Asset type: The category of an asset (for example, a dataset, a report, or a document) that a rule can target. Governance rules are available for all asset types including technical and business asset types, models and policies.
- Pass condition: A condition that helps determine a score for an asset. A rule can have one or more passing conditions.
- Operators: Actions used to evaluate a field value (for example, is, is not, is populated, etc.).
- Scores: A rating (good, average, poor) assigned to an asset based on its metadata and the rule’s conditions.
- Dimensions: The aspect or category to which the rule applies. The dimensions available for selection are: Completeness, Ownership, and Maturity.
Create a governance rule for a dataset
- Navigate to Catalog and then select the Datasets tab.
- Click the asset name for which you want to create a governance rule.
- Click on the Rules tab and the select Data Governance page. You will now see the list of existing governance rules or a message indicating no rules are present.
-
The rules are listed in a table with columns:
- Rule: Name of the rule.
- Dimension: The aspect or category the rule pertains to.
- Target Asset Type: The asset type the rule applies to.
- Target Assets: The number of assets that the rule applies to.
- Status: The state of the rule's creation process. Examples include Completed, In Progress, Failed, etc. This reflects where the rule stands in its setup workflow and is not a reflection of whether the rule is enabled or how it was evaluated.
- Last Evaluated: The date and time when the rule was last evaluated.
- To create a new role, click Create Rule.
-
A window will appear prompting for rule details. Fill in the required details:
- Name: Enter a descriptive name for the rule.
- Description (optional): Provide a detailed explanation of the rule’s purpose and scope.
- Dimension: Select or define the relevant dimension (such as Completeness, Maturity, etc).
- Target asset type: Specify the asset type the rule applies to.
- Scoring bands: Represents predefined ranges
used to classify scores or performance metrics.
- Poor: 0-80%
- Average: 80-90%
- Good: 90-100%
- Define the rule criteria or Pass
condition based on metadata fields or asset
attributes:
- Click Add condition to add multiple criteria for rule to be applicable.
- Select the value for metadata field.
- Choose the appropriate operator based on the evaluation type.
- Specify the value(s) for comparison if applicable.
- Click Create to save the rule to add it to the list. The new rule will now appear in the list.
Remain in this tab and perform updates, duplications, or deletions of governance rules using the workflow described in this topic: Manage existing governance rules.
View rule scores for a dataset
To view the rule scores for a dataset, on the Datasets tab, click the asset name for which you wish to see the scores. Then, navigate to the Scoring tab and select the Data Governance tab. The page shows how well an asset complies with governance rules.
You will see Governance Score Dimensions, giving you a high-level view of metadata health. Click a dimension to view its score, showing how individual rules contribute to that dimension.
Key elements you’ll see:
- Completeness: A dimension score that indicates how complete the asset’s metadata is. Example: 50%.
- Ownership: A dimension score that indicates how clearly ownership or stewardship information is defined. Example: 100%.
- Score: An overall governance score for the asset, typically expressed as a percentage (e.g., 75%). This is usually derived from a weighted combination of the dimension scores.
- Color cues: Visual indicators of status to quickly convey health or risk.
Details shown when you focus on a specific dimension:
- Rule: A list of rules and their
details that contribute to this dimension (for example,
“Description and Status,” “PII Populated,” and others).
Click a rule score in the right panel to view its full
details, including description, criteria, assets impacted,
and context.
- Each rule contributes to the overall dimension score. A rule at 100% meets its criteria; 0% indicates it does not.
- The Score card aggregates the dimension results to reflect the asset’s governance posture. A higher score indicates stronger governance alignment.
- Score: A colored badge showing the rule’s contribution to the dimension (e.g., 0%, 100%, 50%).
- Last Evaluated: The date and time when this rule was last run or updated.
