Create and manage governance rules to evaluate assets based on metadata and asset type. View scores and rule details for datasets and fields.

Governance rules run automatically and re-score assets when the rule or asset metadata changes. Specifically:
  • When an asset's metadata changes and a governance rule applies to that metadata, the rule runs automatically. For example, updating the asset's certification status to "Certified" triggers the related rule.
  • When a new asset is added to its asset type, the corresponding governance rule runs automatically and scores the new asset.

Key terms

  • Governance rule: A criterion that evaluates assets across one or more asset types.
  • Asset type: The category of an asset (for example, dataset, field, report, or document). Governance rules are available for all asset types including technical and business asset types, models, and policies.
  • Pass condition: A condition that determines a score for an asset. A rule can have one or more pass conditions.
  • Operators: Actions used to evaluate a field value (for example, is, is not, is populated).
  • Scores: A rating (good, average, poor) assigned to an asset based on its metadata and the rule's conditions.
  • Dimensions: The aspect or category to which the rule applies. Available dimensions are Completeness, Ownership, and Maturity.

Governance scores

  • The Governance Score Dimensions section shows a high-level view of metadata health. Click a dimension to view its score and see how individual rules contribute to it.
    • Completeness: Indicates how complete the asset's metadata is. Example: 50%.
    • Ownership: Indicates how clearly ownership or stewardship information is defined. Example: 100%.
    • Score: The overall governance score for the asset, expressed as a percentage (for example, 75%). This is derived from a weighted combination of the dimension scores.
    • Color cues: Visual indicators that convey health or risk status.

Create a governance rule

Create governance rules for datasets and fields to evaluate assets based on metadata and asset type.

Create a governance rule for datasets

Create dataset-level governance rules to evaluate asset compliance.

  1. Go to Catalog and select the Datasets tab.
  2. Click the asset name for which you want to create a governance rule.
  3. Click the Rules tab and select Data Governance.
    You see the list of existing governance rules or a message indicating no rules exist.
  4. Review the rules table, which displays these columns:
    • Rule: Name of the rule.
    • Dimension: The aspect or category the rule pertains to.
    • Target Asset Type: The asset type the rule applies to.
    • Target Assets: The number of assets the rule applies to.
    • Status: The state of the rule's creation process (Completed, In Progress, Failed). This reflects where the rule stands in its setup workflow, not whether the rule is enabled or how it was evaluated.
    • Last Evaluated: The date and time when the rule was last evaluated.
  5. Click Create Rule.
  6. Fill in the required rule details in the window that appears:
    • Name: Enter a descriptive name for the rule.
    • Description (optional): Provide a detailed explanation of the rule's purpose and scope.
    • Dimension: Select the relevant dimension (Completeness, Ownership, or Maturity).
    • Target asset type: Specify the asset type the rule applies to.
    • Scoring bands: Predefined ranges used to classify scores or performance metrics.
      • Poor: 0-80%
      • Average: 80-90%
      • Good: 90-100%
  7. Define the rule criteria or Pass condition based on metadata fields or asset attributes:
    • Click Add condition to add multiple criteria for the rule to apply.
    • Select the value for metadata field.
    • Choose the appropriate operator based on the evaluation type.
    • Specify the values for comparison if applicable.
  8. Click Create to save the rule.
    The new rule appears in the list.

Create a governance rule for fields

Field-level governance improves consistency, searchability, and compliance. It supports data stewardship and auditing by ensuring critical metadata is defined for each field and aligned with governance policies.
  1. Go to Catalog and select the Fields tab.
  2. Click the field name for which you want to create a governance rule.
  3. Click the Rules tab and select Data Governance.
    You see the list of existing governance rules or a message indicating no rules exist.
  4. Click Create Rule.
  5. Follow the same process as for datasets:
    • Enter a descriptive name and optional description.
    • Select the relevant dimension (Completeness, Ownership, or Maturity).
    • Specify the target asset type for the field.
    • Define pass conditions based on field metadata attributes such as field descriptions, domain classification, and PII indicators.
    • Click Create to save the rule.

View rule scores

The process for viewing governance rule scores is the same for datasets and fields. The only difference is the starting point in the Catalog interface.
  1. Go to the asset for which you want to view scores:
    • For datasets: On the Datasets tab, click the asset name.
    • For fields: On the Fields tab, click the field name.
  2. Click the Scoring tab and select Data Governance.
    The page shows how well the asset complies with governance rules.
  3. Click a dimension to view its score and see how individual rules contribute to it.

    Details shown when you focus on a specific dimension:

    • Rule: A list of rules and their details that contribute to this dimension (for example, "Description and Status," "PII Populated"). Click a rule score in the right panel to view its full details, including description, criteria, assets impacted, and context.
      • Each rule contributes to the overall dimension score. A rule at 100% meets its criteria; 0% indicates it does not.
      • The Score card aggregates the dimension results to reflect the asset's governance posture. A higher score indicates stronger governance alignment.
    • Score: A colored badge showing the rule's contribution to the dimension (for example, 0%, 100%, 50%).
    • Last Evaluated: The date and time when this rule was last run or updated.
  4. Use the search field to find rules by name or metadata terms, especially when many rules apply to the asset.
    Note: Metadata term search applies only when the metadata term is included within the rule name. If a dimension score drops, review the contributing rules in that dimension to identify metadata fields that need updates or policy adjustments. Check which assets are affected by each rule and how changes to metadata or governance criteria may affect the asset's score.
