You can configure technical asset types for the various technologies used across your infrastructure and applications and track detailed technical metadata. There are two ways to understand and create technical assets: the Containment Hierarchy and the Inheritance Hierarchy. These views help you explore technical asset relationships. Use them to plan asset placement, manage field reuse, and maintain governance consistency across technical asset types.

To begin creating technical assets using the hierarchy views:

  1. Go to Configuration > Governance > Technical Assets.

  2. Use the view switcher to choose one of the following:

    • Inheritance Hierarchy: A view that shows how an asset type inherits fields from base types. This helps you understand and control which properties are available on derived assets.
    • Containment Hierarchy: A tree view that shows how assets contain or group other assets. It enables you to add, edit, or remove parent container asset types and to see the hierarchical structure at a glance.

  3. On first visit, all nodes are collapsed; expand or collapse them as needed. Your expanded/collapsed state is saved per user and persists across page refreshes and sign-in sessions.

  4. Selecting a node opens a side panel that shows the asset's details, its containment and inheritance relationships, and quick navigation links to related assets.

  5. You can also search across the hierarchy:
    • The search applies to all asset types within the hierarchy.
    • Matching asset types are displayed and the matched text is highlighted.
    • If a search term matches a child, the parent is expanded to reveal the child and the matching text.
    • The search criteria and the expanded/collapsed state persist as you navigate to other areas of the workspace. The state persists across logout/login sessions.

Use the containment hierarchy view

The containment hierarchy view allows you to navigate and search through parent-child relationships between asset types. It is the default view for Technical and Business Asset Types, replacing the previous flat list view.

To define containment for a new asset type, follow these steps:

  1. Click Create Asset Type to create a new asset type.
  2. In the Create Asset Type page, enter the asset type name (such as Data File), set the Display format to the preferred token (such as {Name}) and optionally fill Description.
  3. Click Select in the Inherit from (optional) to choose the asset type to inherit from.
    What's changed: In the new user experience, Select appears as Browse. For more information on the new experience, see About the new user experience.
    Note: Fields and relationship types from the selected asset type will be inherited.
  4. Define the Asset type purpose. Decide whether this type is used to create assets directly or to serve as a base for derived types.
    • Choose Used to create assets to allow users to create assets from this asset type.
    • Choose Used to create other asset types through inheritance to define an asset type that serves as a base for other types but cannot be used to create assets directly.
  5. Click Add Parent Container Asset Type to select one or more parent asset types that will contain this asset type and create additional containment paths if needed. For each parent, set the Predicate to parent (commonly Child Of).
  6. Select the Parent Asset Type in the right pane. This displays and validates the selected parent's Details, Fields, and Relationship Types. Confirm which fields are inherited and which are overridden in this specific asset type.
  7. If you see warnings such as "You cannot select this asset type. Choose an unrelated one.", choose a different, appropriate parent that fits the containment hierarchy.
  8. Click Select to finalize the containment.
    What's changed: In the new user experience, Select appears as Browse. For more information on the new experience, see About the new user experience.
Verify it appears under the intended parent(s) in the containment hierarchy view.

Use the inheritance hierarchy view

The inheritance hierarchy view allows you to navigate and search through inheritance relationships between asset types. The Inheritance view is accessible as a clickable option next to the Containment view for Technical and Business Asset Types.

Common inheritable asset types: Known inheritable asset types in the system include:

  • Common / Base
  • Datasource
  • Dataset
  • Field
  • Pipeline
  • Report
  • Schema

To define inheritance for a new asset type, follow these steps:

  1. Click Create Asset Type to create a new asset type.
  2. In the Create Asset Type page, enter the asset type name (such as Data File), set the Display format to the preferred token (such as {Name}) and optionally fill Description.
  3. Define the Asset type purpose. Decide whether this type is used to create assets directly or to serve as a base for derived types.
    • Choose Used to create assets to allow users to create assets from this asset type.
    • Choose Used to create other asset types through inheritance to define an asset type that serves as a base for other types but cannot be used to create assets directly.
  4. Click Select in the Inherit from (optional) to choose the asset type to inherit from.
    Note: Fields and relationship types from the selected asset type will be inherited.
  5. The right pane displays the selected parent's Details, Fields, and Relationship Types. Confirm which fields are inherited and which are overridden in this specific asset type.
  6. Click Select to finalize the inheritance choice.
  7. After saving, review the Inherit from field sections in the dialog to understand the parent and view its details.
    Note: Configuring an asset type in Inheritance hierarchy affects how you create new assets in Containment hierarchy and how attributes are inherited or overridden in Inheritance view. If you change the base type or the set of inheritable fields, the Create Asset Type page and the resulting asset's attributes may change.
