You can classify datasets and fields as CDE or PII using Gio™ AI Assistant.

Identify CDEs and PII across datasets - Effective data governance requires identifying and managing two key categories of data:

  • Critical Data Elements (CDEs): Fields with high regulatory, operational, or analytical importance. Examples include customer names, account numbers, financial metrics, or compliance-related fields.
  • Personally Identifiable Information (PII): Data that can identify an individual, such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, social security numbers, or dates of birth.

Using the Gio™ AI Assistant, you can quickly identify, validate, and classify these fields to ensure compliance, maintain data quality, and implement governance policies. It combines multiple analysis methods to deliver accurate, explainable classifications:

  • AI analysis: Machine learning models evaluate data characteristics and patterns
  • Business rules: Rules enforce your organization's governance standards
  • Semantic analysis: Keywords, descriptions, and relationships are analyzed
  • Metadata signals: Asset names, types, and relationships inform classifications
Rules:
  • Actions apply to one asset at a time.
  • If multiple assets are referenced, the assistant prompts you to select one.
  • If field-level configuration is missing, configure before retrying.
  • Classification is limited to CDE (Critical Data Element) and PII (Personally Identifiable Information). Other classification types, such as sensitivity levels, are not currently supported.
  • When analyzing related assets, the system recognizes only assets with types containing the keywords "report," "policy," or "model." Other asset types may not be included in the analysis.
  • Classification is limited to datasets and fields only. Technical assets, such as Power BI reports or other asset types, cannot be classified using this workflow.

  1. Go to Catalog > Datasets or Fields and click on a dataset or field card.
  2. Open Gio™ AI Assistant.
  3. Ask the Gio™ AI Assistant to update a specific asset by using natural language prompts such as:
    1. Dataset-level classification:
      • "Update dataset X in the catalog as a CDE"
      • "Update column Y in the catalog as a CDE"
      • "Update dataset X in the catalog as containing PII"
    2. Fields-level classification: "Tag field Y as PII in the catalog"
  4. The Gio™ AI Assistant may perform validation checks to ensure the classification is appropriate. If the classification does not meet standard criteria, the AI Assistant will ask for confirmation.
  5. The Gio™ AI Assistant requests your confirmation before making changes to your catalog. Review the details and approve the update.
  6. Verify the update was successful. The Gio™ AI Assistant confirms that the asset has been updated. If you do not have permission to make the update, the AI Assistant will inform you and suggest next steps.

Your catalog is updated with the new CDE or PII classification. The asset is now tagged and can be used for governance policies, quality monitoring, and compliance tracking.

Quick-reference table: sample prompts for this workflow
Action Sample prompts
Identify CDEs
  • What are the critical data elements in my customer dataset?
  • Show me CDEs for the finance domain.
  • Identify critical fields in dataset X.
  • Is dataset X a CDE?
Clarify CDEs
  • Why is field X classified as a CDE?
  • What criteria make this field a CDE?
  • Is this dataset a CDE based on regulatory requirements?
Tip: For lineage information, use the Conversational Search Agent. For business impact analysis, consult your data steward or governance team.
Update CDEs Update dataset X in the catalog as a CDE
Identify PII
  • Show me fields that contain PII in my customer dataset
  • Which fields in dataset X contain personally identifiable information?
  • Is field Y PII?
  • Does field Y contain personally identifiable data?
Clarify PII
  • Why is field X classified as PII?
  • Is this field classified as PII?
  • Does this dataset contain PII?
Tip: The system classifies fields as PII or non-PII. For detailed PII type categorization or exception handling, contact your data governance team.
Update PII Update dataset X in the catalog as containing PII
