The breadcrumb navigation bar helps you understand where you are in the Catalog and move between asset types and individual assets. It displays your current location as a path of clickable links, making it simple to jump back to higher levels in the hierarchy.
About breadcrumb in Catalog:
- It is a visual trail that shows your logical location within the Catalog structure (not necessarily the exact path you took).
- Appears near the top of the page and displays the hierarchy of assets leading to your current view.
- For example: Catalog > Datasets > Sales Database > Customer Data
- Each element in the breadcrumb is a clickable link (except the last item, which represents your current location).
Key features:
- Clickable links: Each element (except the last) is clickable for quick navigation.
- Logical hierarchy: Always reflects the primary location of an asset, even if you reached it through a different route.
- Page titles: Breadcrumbs include page titles for better context.
- Hover indication: Links highlight when hovered to show they are clickable.
- Consistent behavior: Works the same way across all asset types: Datasources, Datasets, Fields, and Technical Assets.
Understanding breadcrumb structure:
The breadcrumb path reflects the hierarchy of assets in the Catalog:
- Catalog: The root level. Clicking this takes you to the Catalog homepage.
- Asset type: The category of asset you are viewing (Datasources, Datasets, Fields, or Technical Assets). Clicking this takes you to the asset type landing page.
- Asset name: The specific asset you are currently viewing (such as a dataset or field name). This is the final, non-clickable element in the breadcrumb.
- Sub-asset name (if applicable): When viewing nested assets (such as a field within a dataset), the breadcrumb shows the parent asset as a clickable link.
Common use cases:
Breadcrumb navigation is useful in these scenarios:
- Return to asset type: You are viewing a specific dataset and want to see all datasets. Click "Datasets" in the breadcrumb to return to the Datasets landing page.
- Return to parent asset: You are viewing a field within a dataset and want to see the full dataset details. Click the dataset name in the breadcrumb.
- Return to Catalog home: You are deep in the asset hierarchy and want to start fresh. Click "Catalog" in the breadcrumb to return to the homepage.
- Avoid confusion: Instead of using the browser back button (which may not always take you where you expect), use the breadcrumb to navigate with certainty.
- Combine with search: Use the search bar and breadcrumbs together for flexible navigation. Search to discover an asset, then use breadcrumbs to go to related assets in the same hierarchy without returning to the search results page.
