Domains are a first-class governed asset type in the Data Governance service. They serve as organizational containers that help you structure your data governance framework. Domains enable you to group related business and technical assets, establish clear ownership, and maintain hierarchical relationships across your data landscape.

Limited Availability: This feature is currently available only in select workspaces and might be subject to change before general availability.

When you open a domain, the details page provides a centralized location to view and manage all aspects of the domain. The page includes sections for child domains and grouped assets, allowing you to organize your data governance structure efficiently.

To start using domains:

  1. Go to Governance > Domains to access the Domains section.
  2. Create root-level domains that represent your organizational structure.
  3. Create child domains under parent domains to establish hierarchies.
  4. Group business and technical assets with domains.

Domains support the following relationships:

  • Hierarchical relationships: Parent and child relationships between domains to establish domain hierarchies
  • Asset grouping relationships: "Groups and grouped by" relationships that link domains to business and technical assets

Domain properties

Each domain asset has the following properties:

Property Description Required
Name A unique identifier for the domain within your system Yes
Description An optional text field that explains the domain's purpose and scope No
Tags Optional labels for categorization and filtering of domains No
Owner The designated responsible party for the domain, typically a business owner or data steward No
Parent Domain The parent domain if this domain is a child domain in the hierarchy No

Benefits of using domains

  • Improved organization: Group related assets under logical domain structures that reflect your business organization
  • Clear ownership: Assign responsibility for domain management to specific business owners or data stewards
  • Scalability: Manage large numbers of assets through hierarchical organization
  • Consistency: Apply governance policies and asset groups consistently across domain hierarchies
  • Flexibility: Convert child domains to root-level domains without losing ownership or relationship details
