Semantic type fields are custom properties that you can assign to semantic types to classify them according to your organization's data governance policies.

Semantic type fields provide a flexible way to add custom metadata to semantic types. Each workspace can define its own set of semantic type fields, which are then available for assignment to all semantic types in that workspace. Use semantic type fields to identify sensitive data, enforce security policies, and track data lineage.

The Semantic Type Fields list page is located in Configuration > Catalog > Semantic Type Fields. It provides several actions for managing fields. Access these actions through the context menu by clicking the menu icon on a field row or right-clicking the field.

  • Edit: Open the field edit dialog to modify field properties, validation rules, and display options.
  • Delete: Remove the field from the workspace. Note that default (built-in) fields cannot be deleted.
  • Move to Top: Move the field to the beginning of the list.
  • Move Up: Move the field up one position in the list.
  • Move Down: Move the field down one position in the list.
  • Move to Bottom: Move the field to the end of the list.

Editable versus non-editable properties

The Data Integrity Suite distinguishes between default (built-in) fields and custom fields in terms of which properties can be edited after creation. This section clarifies the editing capabilities for each field type.

Field type Editable properties Non-editable properties
Custom
  • Field Name
  • Requirement (Required or Optional)
  • Description
  • Value Selection and Validation properties (varies by data type)
  • Display Options (such as Listable, Show if Empty, Column Width)
  • Data type (set during field creation and cannot be changed)
  • API Name (auto-generated and used for integrations)
Default Display Options only (such as Listable, Show if Empty, Column Width)

Note: Default (built-in) fields are editable in a limited extent. You can only edit properties included in the Display Options section. A notification message indicates that some field properties cannot be edited because they are part of the required default configuration. To edit a default field, click the field name in the list to open the field details panel. Click Edit to open the edit dialog. Modify the Display Options as needed, then click Save Changes to apply your modifications.
