Use the asset impact diagram to view all assets connected to your selected asset. The diagram shows your asset at the center with connected assets as grouped nodes and directional connectors. You can explore dependencies, filter by relationship type, and drill down into connections to assess change impact before modifying critical assets.

  1. Go to Catalog and select an asset type (Datasources, Datasets, Fields, Business Assets, or Technical Assets).
  2. Click an asset name to open its Details page.
  3. Switch to the Relationships tab.
    The asset impact diagram appears by default. Your selected asset appears at the center with all connected assets grouped by type in surrounding nodes.
  4. Review the diagram elements to understand the layout.
    Here's what each element represents:
    • Center node: Your selected asset, displayed at the center with a distinct visual highlight. Shows the asset type and name.
    • Related asset nodes: Grouped by asset type, surrounding the center node. Each node displays the asset type, asset names (with "Show More/Show Less" for 5+ assets), and a count of related assets. Color-coded by asset type. Numbers on nodes indicate how many related assets exist for that type.
    • Connector lines: Directional lines between nodes showing relationships. Arrow direction indicates whether the center asset is the subject (arrow pointing outward) or object (arrow pointing inward) of the relationship. Labeled with the relationship predicate or its inverse.
    • Placeholder asset nodes: Nodes representing assets that exist in relationships but aren't yet cataloged or fully supported in the system. These nodes appear grayed out and are labeled "Placeholder Assets" to indicate they're not yet available for interaction or detailed exploration. To view placeholder assets in the diagram, enable the Show Placeholder Assets toggle at the top of the diagram.
  5. Double-click any asset node to expand its relationships. Expanding relationships lets you drill deeper into your asset's ecosystem. Here's what happens when you expand:
    • A new cluster of nodes appears, and the diagram re-centers on the selected asset.
    • Click the X on the connector line to close the expanded cluster.
    • Your existing search or filter criteria automatically applies to the newly loaded relationships.
  6. Click any asset in the diagram to view its full details.

  7. Click any connector line (the line between two nodes) to view relationship details.
    The side panel displays the relationship type, predicate, and any custom fields associated with the connection.
  8. Right-click any asset to access additional actions.
    A context menu appears with options: Show Information, Open, and Open in New Tab.
  9. Use zoom and pan to navigate the diagram. Use these techniques to focus on specific areas:
    • Scroll: Zoom in and out. Scroll up to zoom in; scroll down to zoom out.
    • Click and drag: Pan the diagram across the canvas.
    • Home icon: Located in the lower right corner. Re-centers the diagram on your originally selected asset.
  10. Search for specific assets by clicking the search field and entering a search term. Here's how search works:
    • Search applies only to assets currently open on the diagram and searches across asset names, descriptions, tags, relationship types, and asset locations.
    • Matching assets are highlighted; non-matching cards and relationship arrows are visually de-emphasized.
    • Already opened relationships remain visible, but non-matching cards within them are still knocked back.
    • Click the Next button to go to the next matching asset.
    Note: Search is limited to assets already loaded on the diagram. If you don't find what you're looking for, expand more relationships first.
  11. Filter the diagram by asset type, predicate, or relationship type using the dropdown menus at the top. Choose your filter criteria to focus your analysis:
    • Filter applies only to assets currently open on the diagram.
    • Asset Type filter: filter by one or more asset types. Only selected types are displayed.
    • Predicate filter: filter by one or more relationship predicates. Only selected predicates are displayed.
    • Relationship Type filter: filter by one or more relationship types. Only selected types are displayed.
    • Non-matching cards and relationship arrows are visually de-emphasized. Already opened relationships remain visible even if they don't match the filter criterion, but non-matching cards within them are still knocked back.
    • Reset All Filters button: Clears all active search and filter criteria, displaying all assets and relationships again.
    Tip: Combine multiple filters to isolate specific relationship patterns. For example, filter by asset type and predicate to see only the connections you need to analyze.
  12. After searching or filtering, double-click any asset to expand its relationships.
    • Your search and filter criteria persist as you explore deeper and automatically applies to the newly loaded relationships.
    • All non-matching elements in the newly loaded relationships are visually de-emphasized.

You've successfully opened and explored the asset impact diagram. You now understand your asset's ecosystem placement, dependencies, and how to interact with the diagram, drilling down into specific connections, searching for assets, and filtering by type, predicate, or relationship type.

The system remembers your last-selected view (diagram or list) when you access the Relationships tab on any asset. If you were viewing the diagram on one asset, the next asset you open will also display the diagram view by default.

Special scenarios:

  • Asset with no relationships: The diagram renders with a single center node representing the asset. No surrounding nodes or connector lines are displayed.
  • High-density relationships: When an asset has many relationships, the diagram automatically groups related assets by type and uses "Show More/Show Less" controls on nodes with 5 or more assets of the same type.
  • Deep navigation: You can expand multiple levels of relationships by double-clicking assets. The diagram handles complex networks by allowing you to collapse expanded clusters using the X on connector lines.
  • Slow-loading relationships: If relationships take longer than expected to load, a notification appears with a "Retry" option. Click to attempt loading again.
