Define relationships between assets to understand impact and dependencies. Use relationships to visualize how changes to one asset affect other assets and how business terms relate to applications, processes, and each other.

An administrator must create relationship types before individual assets can be related. Define relationship types specific to your organization's requirements.

Note: You must have permissions to view and edit relationship configuration.

Create a relationship type

  1. Go to Configuration > Governance > Relationships.
  2. Click Create Relationship. The Create Relationship Type dialog opens.
  3. Select a Subject, Predicate, and Object from their respective drop-downs. Set the Subject Cardinality and Object Cardinality to One (single instance) or Many (multiple instances).
  4. Click Create Relationship Type to save the relationship type.
Note:
  • Subject is the higher-level item; Object is the lower-level item. This affects sourcing and synonym inheritance; synonyms defined on the relationship appear on the Object.
  • Cardinality defines how many instances of one entity associate with another entity. Combinations are One-to-One, One-to-Many, Many-to-One, or Many-to-Many.
  • To view existing relationships, navigate to Configuration > Governance > Relationships. The relationship list view displays all Subject, Predicate, and Object values. The Relationships Exist column shows True or False to indicate if a relationship exists. Click a row to open the Information panel.
  • To edit a relationship type, click the ellipsis next to a relationship in the list and select Edit. Modify the cardinality as needed and click Save.
  • To delete a relationship type, click the ellipsis next to a relationship and select Delete. In the confirmation dialog, click Delete.

    Warning: Deletion cannot be undone. If a relationship exists (the Relationships Exist column shows True), the Edit and Delete options are disabled for that relationship type.

Manage relationships between asset types

Manage relationships between asset types within the same asset class to move child assets between different parent assets.
  1. Define parent asset types (Parent 1, Parent 2) and child asset types (Child 1, Child 2).
  2. Use the Hierarchy predicate to create relationship types. Set the Predicate to "is parent of" and the Inverse to "is child of".
  3. Create relationships between parent and child asset types: Parent 1-Child 1, Parent 1-Child 2, Parent 2-Child 1, and Parent 2-Child 2.
  4. For each asset type, create asset items and establish relationships (for example, Parent 1 Asset Item "is parent of" Child 1 Asset Item).
  5. To move a child asset to a different parent, delete the existing parent relationship, then create a new relationship with the new parent.
Note: Each child asset item can have only one parent. Moving child asset items between parents preserves the child's change history and other metadata.
